Understanding the Israeli Address System

The address system in Israel follows a standardized format that includes several key components. Here’s a breakdown of the typical structure:

Recipient Name
The recipient’s name is written first, usually in the format “Mr./Mrs. First Name Last Name”.

Street Address
This includes the building number followed by the street name. In Hebrew, the building number comes after the street name, while in English, it precedes the street name.

Example in Hebrew: רחוב יפו 16 (Yafo Street 16)
Example in English: 16 Yafo Street

Apartment/Unit Number
If applicable, the apartment or unit number is included after the street address, often preceded by “דירה” (apartment) in Hebrew or “Apt.” in English.

Example: דירה 4 (Apt. 4)

Postal Code
Israel uses a 7-digit postal code system, introduced in 2013. The postal code is written to the left of the city name.

Example: 9414219 ירושלים (9414219 Jerusalem)

City
The city name is included after the postal code.

Country
“ישראל” (Israel) is written at the end for international mail.

Here’s an example of a complete Israeli address in Hebrew:

מר פלוני אלמוני
רחוב יפו 16, דירה 4
9414219 ירושלים
ישראל

And in English:

Mr. Ploni Almoni
16 Yafo Street, Apt. 4
9414219 Jerusalem
Israel

It’s important to note that apartment numbers are not always included, as some recipients may provide their address without it, expecting the mail carrier to determine the correct mailbox. Additionally, postal codes generally increase from north to south, with some exceptions like Jerusalem, which starts with 9. [1][8][9][10][11][12]

When sending mail to the Palestinian territories, the area should be specified as “Gaza Strip” or “West Bank”, followed by “via Israel” at the end of the address. [11]
